The Latrobe Health Assembly with the support of the Pelvic Pain Foundation of Australia are about to talk about a topic that most shy away from… Pelvic Pain, Period Pain and Endometriosis.
The Latrobe Health Assembly will be hosting a series of school talks with students at Latrobe Valley high schools throughout February with the support of the Pelvic Pain Foundation of Australia in what will be a pilot project for Victoria.
Pelvic Pain affects 1 in 5 women and 1 in 12 men at some time in their life – yet it’s a condition that is rarely discussed. As most types of pelvic pain can’t be diagnosed with blood tests or scans, it’s easy for women and men with this problem to suffer pain for years before finding the help they need.
Pelvic Pain results in 1 in 5 women missing at least one day of school per a month while two in five women said pain affected their concentration or performance in class. Many of these young women run the risk of falling behind during their final years of schooling.
Kurnai College Physical Education teacher, Ange Gordon explains “we see a number of students that regularly miss classes due to period and pelvic pain. These students fall into a routine of monthly absenteeism resulting in additional pressure to catch-up with class work”.
Ange Gordon continued “providing these students with accurate information and coping mechanisms to minimise the impact of pelvic pain will improve our student’s ability to manage their workload and live life to the fullest”.
The classroom based sessions will be held in 8 local high schools and presented by Libby Parker, Health Educator with Pelvic Pain Foundation of Australia followed by a positive and interactive, open discussion with students.
In addition to the school based sessions, two evening presentations will be held in Morwell to open up the opportunity for students not studying at participating schools. The public sessions also allow parents/guardians to attend and play an active role in the health and wellbeing of their child while promoting open discussions between parents and children. All parents and their teenage children are encouraged to attend this free educational session.
